GFC "On the Job" Series: Brian Perez (London Business School, Investment Banking)

The GFC interview series focuses on the lives of students and professionals in top corporate jobs around the world. Our goal is to take a deeper dive into the backgrounds and stories of different professionals to help you better understand the challenges and opportunities that come with different jobs.

GFC: Can you tell us about your educational background?

I spent most of my life in the Philippines. I got my Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics from the University of the Philippines, and I’ll be heading to London Business School this September for my Masters in Financial Analysis.

GFC: How did you get interested in finance and capital markets?

My introduction to the industry was (almost) like shock-therapy. I had my freshman internship at Ernst & Young, and I placed in the Financial Services Risk Management Advisory group. I had little idea what a derivative contract was at that point, so I was scratching my head during the first few days of a structuring engagement. After a couple hundred pages of Hull, I was able to hang on, thankfully. I was involved in credit research after that, which got me interested in financial inclusion and capital markets development.

GFC: Can you walk us through your most recent internship experiences?

I just finished an off-cycle internship at the investment management division of Bank of the Philippine Islands. I covered select Philippine transport issues for the group’s $3.4bn long-only equity portfolios, and evaluated prospects of high-yield corporate and European sovereign debt issues. I also contributed to regular market reports and ad hoc commentary for institutional clients.

GFC: Which experience is your favorite and why?

Probably the one I just mentioned --I got to look at a broad range of assets from a buy-side perspective, and the experience gave me a lot of insights on how to better serve institutional clients as a banker. There was a lot of room for creativity when building investment theses, and constant discourse was natural.

GFC: What tips do you have for current students looking to find an internship?

Meet everyone you can, be proactive in working with and learning from others, and maximize your long-run return on time invested. And start preparing early—to quote an LBS alumnus, “for Analyst roles, TIME STARTS NOW!”

GFC: Thank you so much for your time!
